The scoop on Genetically Modified foods

We Americans have lived through many threats that had the potential to wipe out our nation or even our species. Once again we find ourselves in such a predicament. Is it from a renegade meteorite that threatens a cataclysmic ice age as dust covers our planet? Could it possibly be from nuclear holocaust? We’ve watched recently as the ground shifted under the very feet of the Japanese people and many believed the entire island chain would submerge. We saw Hiroshima and Nagasaki decimated by nuclear bombs. Many of you remember the Cuban missile crisis. Well it’s none of these more obvious threats. According to Jeffrey Smith, the threat we face now is from the very foods we are consuming! I just attended a seminar the first week of August where he spoke on Genetically Modified Organisms and their effect on our health. He is the foremost authority on this subject. He affirmed a lot of the things I had supposed. Following are just a few of the things I learned.
Since 1996 Americans have been eating genetically modified (GM) foods. GM plants, such as soybean, corn, cottonseed, and canola, have had foreign genes forced into their DNA. The inserted genes come from species such as bacteria and viruses, which have never been in the human food supply. The American Academy of Environmental Medicine states, “Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food,” including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, faulty insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system. They ask physicians to advise patients to avoid GM food. There are 8 GM food crops to be aware of. They are; soy, corn, canola, cotton, sugar beets, Hawaiian papaya, zucchini, and yellow crookneck squash.
We have the ability as a people, as consumers, to stop GM foods in this country by voting with our dollars. The Monsanto Corporation told Andersen Consulting (the same company that consulted Enron) that their goal was to have no seeds in the world that they did not produce within ten years. They wanted a monopoly on all food! This is the same chemical company that told us agent orange was safe!! Their tampering with the genetic code of our food may be irreversible in nature and in the effects this may have had on our genome, our very genetic pool as a species. In the meantime, start asking about the foods you buy and begin avoiding GM foods, especially for your children’s sake. The evidence is overwhelmingly against these foods and hopefully GMs will go the way they did in 1999 in Europe – wiped from the shelves by popular demand and outlawed!
